GILLINGHAM, DORSET – Residents of The Malthouse Care Home recently enjoyed a delightful day out with a scenic trip to the historic Sherborne Abbey. Accompanied by members of staff, four residents—Valerie, Joy, Jean and Doug—set off through the picturesque Dorset countryside to visit one of England’s most treasured landmarks.
The excursion was part of The Malthouse’s ongoing initiative to offer residents enriching and meaningful experiences beyond the home. Carefully planned to ensure both comfort and enjoyment, the trip allowed residents to immerse themselves in the awe-inspiring architecture and history of Sherborne Abbey.
The group was particularly captivated by the abbey’s impressive features, including a detailed scale model of the building made entirely from LEGO. Another highlight was the large feature mirror, cleverly positioned to provide an exceptional view of the fan-vaulted ceiling—one of the earliest and most exquisite examples of its kind in the country.
Leah, Activities Coordinator at The Malthouse, reflected on the day:
“It was really lovely to see the residents enjoying the sunshine on the journey and taking in the beauty and history of such an iconic building. There was a real sense of awe and appreciation.”
Resident Jean was especially moved by a handmade picture on display, which featured various Dorset churches. She described it as both fascinating and nostalgic.
The outing forms part of a wider programme of activities at The Malthouse, where staff regularly organise trips to local places of interest, as well as special events within the home. Most recently, a vintage motorbike day was held as a unique treat for one resident with a lifelong passion for motorcycles. Plans are also underway for a “day at the races” to celebrate another resident’s love of horse racing.
